Curious how a distance in kilometers turns into a number of steps? It comes down to your stride length, which is closely tied to your height.

Stride length from height

These coefficients are widely cited in biomechanics research and apply to a comfortable, self-selected walking pace on flat ground — not a sprint, not a hike up a hill.

Distance to steps

Steps = Distance ÷ Stride length

A 1 km walk for someone with a 1.31 m stride (roughly a 5'4" woman) works out to about 763 steps. For a 5'9" man with a 4.80 ft stride, a mile comes to about 1,100 steps.

Calories, factoring in body weight

Steps alone don't tell you calories burned — that also depends on body weight. The standard MET-based formula:

Calories burned = METs × Body weight (kg) × Duration (hours)

A moderate walking pace (about 3 mph / 4.8 km/h) is roughly 3.5 METs. Worked example: a 70 kg person walking at a moderate pace for 1 hour burns about 3.5 × 70 × 1 = 245 kcal.

Estimates only

These formulas are estimates, not precision measurements. Stride length increases with walking speed and shortens on hills or uneven ground (by roughly 5–15%). Adults 65+ tend to have 5–15% shorter strides relative to height. Wearables themselves carry error too — roughly ±1–5% on flat, normal-pace walking, but up to ±50% at slow speeds, with wrist placement adding further error versus a waist or ankle sensor. Treat every number here as a reasonable approximation, not a lab-grade measurement.
