Some city pairs are close enough to walk in a week. Others — say, Hanoi to Tokyo, roughly
3,700 km apart — would take months of real walking to cover at a 1:1 distance. Walking Quest
handles that with a setting the creator of a challenge picks once: distance mode, either
Fun or Real.
Both modes track the exact same real, honest step count. Nothing about how your steps are measured or synced changes based on mode — only the target distance you're walking toward.
Real mode sets your target to the actual geographic distance between the two cities, unscaled. It's the original, literal version of the game: walk the real number of kilometers between where you picked. For nearby city pairs this is genuinely completable. For distant ones — a few-thousand-kilometer pair — most challenges won't reach 100% before the challenge closes, and that's by design: finishing a Real-mode long-haul challenge is meant to be a rare, notable accomplishment, not the expectation.
Fun mode keeps the real distance visible but compresses the target using this formula:
targetDistanceKm = sqrt(realDistanceKm) × 0.5
Because it's a square root, the compression is aggressive for long distances and barely noticeable for short ones — exactly the effect you want:
| Real-world distance | Fun mode target | Roughly | |---|---|---| | 100 km | ~5 km | ~1 day of walking | | 3,700 km (Hanoi → Tokyo) | ~30 km | ~6 days | | 20,000 km (antipodal pair) | ~71 km | ~14.4 days |
Regardless of which mode a challenge uses, the real-world distance between your two cities is always shown — Fun mode never pretends the cities are closer than they are, it just sets a different, reachable finish line for your steps to walk toward.
Distance mode is picked by whoever creates the challenge and applies to every participant — since everyone is racing toward the same finish line, it can't be changed once the challenge starts. It's also not a PRO-only setting: both Free and PRO challenges can use either mode. See racing friends in live challenges for how standings work once a race is underway, or see your progress on the route map for how that target distance shows up visually as you walk.
